Surprise

Chapter 3

I should have left.

I was a waitress.

A stranger.

A woman hired to carry champagne and disappear before dessert.

But Emma would not let go of my sleeve.

Every time I moved, she panicked.

So Detective Cole let me sit with her in the library while the police searched the mansion.

Alexander sat across from us, holding Laura’s letter like it might turn to ash.

Vivian was in the dining room with two officers.

I could still hear her voice through the closed doors.

Cold.

Commanding.

Dangerous.

Emma leaned against my side, wrapped in a blanket.

Her wrists had been photographed.

Her hands had been checked.

The red marks were not deep.

But the fear was.

That was harder to measure.

Alexander read the letter aloud because Detective Cole asked him to.

His voice shook.

Alexander,

If anything happens to me tonight, your mother is involved.

I found the trust amendments.

I found the transfers from Emma’s inheritance account into Graham’s investment fund.

I found the medical petition Vivian drafted to declare me unstable.

She plans to say I am a danger to Emma.

She plans to take our daughter.

Please believe Emma if she speaks before I can.

I covered my mouth.

Emma whispered, “Mommy wrote my name.”

Alexander nodded, tears sliding down his face.

“Yes, baby.”

He kept reading.

Vivian is not protecting this family. She is stealing from it.

Graham helped her.

I believe they used your signature.

The east balcony camera was turned off tonight.

If I do not make it to morning, check behind the blue painting.

Alexander stopped.

He looked toward the ballroom.

The blue painting.

The one hiding Emma.

The one hiding Laura’s proof.

Detective Cole asked, “Did your wife ever mention these concerns?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Vivian’s lawyer would love that.

I could feel it.

He continued anyway.

“She said my mother was interfering with Emma’s trust. I thought grief after my father’s death had made everyone paranoid.”

Detective Cole asked, “Why would your mother control Emma’s trust?”

“My father’s will.”

His voice was raw.

“Emma inherited voting shares in Harrington Hotels when she was born. Laura and I controlled them until Emma turned twenty-five. My mother hated that.”

“And Graham?”

“My uncle runs the family investment office. Or he did.”

The detective made notes.

Emma tugged my sleeve.

“Can I tell?”

Alexander turned to her.

“Tell what?”

She looked at Detective Cole.

“Mommy was crying on the balcony.”

The room froze.

Detective Cole crouched.

“You saw her?”

Emma nodded.

“I was supposed to be asleep. I came to ask for water.”

Alexander’s face crumpled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Grandma said if I told, you would go away too.”

I felt Alexander break from across the room.

It was quiet.

No dramatic sound.

Just a father realizing his child had carried a murder in silence because an adult taught her fear.

Detective Cole spoke gently.

“What did you see?”

Emma pointed toward the window.

“Grandma and Uncle Graham yelled. Mommy had papers. Grandma grabbed them. Uncle Graham pushed Mommy’s shoulder.”

Alexander stood suddenly.

“No.”

Detective Cole raised a hand.

“Mr. Harrington.”

Emma began crying.

He dropped back to his chair instantly.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’m listening.”

Emma swallowed.

“Mommy fell. Grandma looked down. Uncle Graham said, ‘Now we fix the story.’”

Silence filled the library.

Then the dining room door slammed open.

Graham’s voice roared, “That child is lying!”

Two officers dragged him back.

Vivian shouted from behind him, “Alexander, she is ill!”

Emma screamed and buried her face against me.

I held her without thinking.

Alexander stood.

This time he did not sit.

“Get them out of this house,” he said.

Detective Cole nodded to an officer.

“Vivian Harrington and Graham Harrington are being detained pending further investigation.”

Vivian’s voice turned sharp.

“You cannot do this to me in my own home.”

Alexander opened the library door.

“You lost the right to call this home when you put my daughter in a wall.”

Vivian looked past him at Emma.

Her face was pure hatred.

“She was always Laura’s child.”

Alexander stepped into the hall.

“She is mine.”

“Then prove it,” Vivian spat. “Ask why Laura hid the real paternity report.”

The words landed hard.

Alexander froze.

Emma lifted her head.

I felt her little body go rigid.

Detective Cole looked at Alexander.

“Do you know what she means?”

“No,” he whispered.

Vivian smiled.

For the first time since the painting opened, she looked in control again.

Then the officer searching the hidden room called out.

“Detective. We found another envelope.”

Detective Cole took it.

The label read:

DNA RESULTS - EMMA HARRINGTON.

Alexander stared.

May you like

Vivian’s smile widened.

And I realized she had one more knife waiting.
