Surprise

Chapter 3

Monica tried to laugh.

"I meant we need to explain the party."

I stared at her.

"Then why did you say our stories?"

She looked toward Vanessa.

Neither woman answered.

Renee came downstairs with Lily in her arms.

David followed behind them.

He was a calm man.

A firefighter.

Someone who rarely lost his temper.

When he saw my expression, he stopped.

"Marcus?"

I shook my head.

"Take Lily into the family room."

Renee nodded.

I wanted the children away from the confrontation.

Caleb had already left with another relative.

The remaining guests were gone.

Only Vanessa, Monica, David, Renee, Lily, and I remained.

Monica folded her arms.

"You're making this much bigger than it is."

I felt my jaw tighten.

"My daughter was eating from the garbage."

She sighed.

"Children do strange things."

"And she says Vanessa locked her in the basement."

Monica went quiet.

I watched her face.

She didn't look surprised.

That was what frightened me.

"Did you know?" I asked.

She looked away.

"About what?"

I stepped closer.

"Don't."

David moved beside me.

He didn't touch anyone.

He simply stood there.

Monica looked nervous.

Then she whispered, "Vanessa was trying to teach Lily consequences."

I stared at her.

"Consequences for what?"

Monica swallowed.

"Being difficult."

My heart pounded.

"She's five."

Monica rolled her eyes.

"Children need discipline."

I felt sick.

"Did you help lock her downstairs?"

She didn't answer.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Marcus, I refuse to be interrogated in my own home."

I turned toward her.

"Our home. And Lily's home."

She crossed her arms.

"You never support me."

I stared at her.

"Not when you're mistreating a child."

Her face hardened.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Lily has been a problem since the day I moved in."

I couldn't breathe.

"What?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Everything revolves around her."

I stared at her.

"Because she's my daughter?"

"You still keep Danielle's pictures everywhere."

My stomach twisted.

There it was.

Danielle.

My late wife.

The woman Vanessa once claimed she respected.

I looked toward the family room.

Renee was reading quietly to Lily.

Then I turned back.

"Danielle is Lily's mother."

Vanessa's voice rose.

"And I'm your wife!"

I shook my head.

"One doesn't erase the other."

She began crying.

"You've never made room for me."

I felt a deep sadness.

I'd given Vanessa a home.

A place in our lives.

A voice in family decisions.

But she seemed to believe that loving her required loving my daughter less.

That was something I could never accept.

I looked at David.

"Can you stay with the women while I check the basement?"

He nodded.

I took my phone and walked downstairs.

The basement door stood beside the pantry.

I'd installed a camera in the hallway years earlier after a plumbing leak.

It didn't record inside the laundry room.

But it covered the doorway.

I opened my security app.

Then stopped.

The basement camera was offline.

I frowned.

It had been functioning three days earlier.

I checked the settings.

Its connection had been disabled manually.

My stomach tightened.

I went downstairs.

The laundry room was clean.

White walls.

A washing machine.

Dryer.

Storage shelves.

No windows.

The door had a lock on the outside.

I'd installed it to keep Lily away from cleaning chemicals when she was a toddler.

But I had never imagined someone would use it to lock her inside.

I stood in the doorway.

Then noticed something behind a shelf.

A small pink hair clip.

Lily's.

I picked it up.

My hands began trembling.

Beside it lay a folded paper.

I opened it.

A child's drawing.

Three stick figures.

Me.

Danielle.

Lily.

Above us, in shaky letters, were the words:

PLEASE COME GET ME.

I sat down on the floor.

For several minutes, I couldn't move.

Then I cried.

I had no idea how long Lily had been sitting in this room.

No idea how many times she'd called for me.

No idea how frightened she'd been.

I took photographs.

The lock.

The drawing.

The hair clip.

Everything.

Then I returned upstairs.

David met me at the stairs.

"Marcus?"

I showed him the drawing.

His expression changed.

"Oh, man."

I couldn't speak.

He placed a hand on my shoulder.

"We're going to help her."

I nodded.

Then I asked Renee to take Lily to the pediatric emergency clinic.

I went with them.

Before leaving, I told Vanessa she needed to make separate arrangements for the night.

She protested.

I didn't argue.

David remained present while she collected essentials, and our attorney later handled the questions concerning the house.

At the clinic, Lily was examined by a pediatrician.

She was tired and upset.

The doctor documented the marks on her arm from where she'd been grabbed earlier that week, according to Lily's account.

He asked questions gently.

I stayed beside her.

When he asked whether she sometimes went without meals, Lily nodded.

My chest tightened.

"How often?" he asked.

She looked at me.

I held her hand.

"Just tell the truth, baby."

She whispered, "When Daddy works far away."

I closed my eyes.

The doctor didn't press her for unnecessary details.

He explained that professionals trained to interview children would handle further questions.

I appreciated that.

I didn't want Lily forced to repeat frightening memories again and again.

After the examination, a social worker spoke with us.

She asked about our home.

Our routines.

And the adults who cared for Lily.

I answered honestly.

Then she asked Lily whether she felt safe with me.

My daughter climbed into my lap.

"Yes."

I began crying.

The social worker smiled gently.

"That's good."

Later that evening, police contacted me after receiving the report.

I provided the photographs and described what I'd observed.

I also mentioned the disabled camera.

An officer asked whether anyone else had access to the security system.

I nodded.

"Vanessa."

Then I remembered something.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa asked me for the administrator password.

She claimed the cameras were sending unnecessary notifications.

I gave it to her.

I had trusted her.

Now I wondered whether she'd disabled the camera to hide what happened downstairs.

The officer documented the information.

Afterward, I took Lily to Renee's house for the night.

I couldn't bear sending her back into the place she'd begun to fear.

When we arrived, Renee made her chicken soup.

Lily ate quietly.

Then asked for another bowl.

I nearly cried.

Later, I tucked her into the guest bed.

She looked at me.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Will Vanessa come here?"

I shook my head.

"Not without permission."

She swallowed.

"What about Aunt Monica?"

I sat beside her.

"Why?"

Lily looked down.

Then whispered, "Aunt Monica took pictures when Vanessa made me stand in the basement."

My heart stopped.

"What pictures?"

Lily began trembling.

I held her hand.

May you like

And when she finally answered, I understood the two women had done more than punish her.

They had been recording her humiliation.
