Chapter 5

Grace arrived before I opened the door.
So did Detective Ramirez.
Vanessa’s smile tightened when she saw them.
Dr. Porter stood beside her holding a leather folder.
She looked professional.
Concerned.
Dangerous.
“I was contacted about possible emotional instability in the home,” she said.
Grace asked, “By whom?”
Dr. Porter looked at Vanessa.
That tiny glance told the whole story.
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Daniel is grieving. He is making paranoid accusations.”
I held up Emily’s folder.
“Like this?”
Dr. Porter’s face changed.
Only for a second.
Grace saw it.
Ramirez saw it.
Vanessa saw that they saw it.
“What is that?” she asked.
“My wife’s handwriting.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Emily was anxious. Everyone knew that.”
Lily appeared behind me wearing pajamas and clutching Bunny.
Vanessa’s expression softened instantly.
A performance.
“Lily, sweetheart. Come here.”
Lily stepped behind Michael.
That movement destroyed Vanessa more than any accusation.
Dr. Porter tried to enter.
Grace blocked her.
“Do you have a warrant?”
“I have a wellness request.”
“Then request from the porch.”
The officers Vanessa brought looked uncomfortable.
Ramirez spoke to them quietly.
Within minutes, they realized they had been used.
Dr. Porter opened her folder.
“I have concerns about Mr. Hale’s ability to parent.”
Grace took one paper.
Then another.
“This evaluation is dated last week.”
“Yes.”
“You did not examine my client.”
“I reviewed collateral information.”
“From Vanessa.”
Dr. Porter’s mouth tightened.
Grace smiled without warmth.
“Thank you.”
Vanessa snapped, “Enough.”
Ramirez stepped forward.
“Mrs. Hale, we need you to come answer questions.”
“For what?”
“Child endangerment and possible evidence tampering.”
Her eyes flashed.
“You have nothing.”
I looked at her.
“I have Emily.”
For the first time, real fear crossed her face.
Then Lily spoke.
Small voice.
“Vanessa gave Mommy tea.”
Everyone froze.
I turned slowly.
“What, baby?”
Lily looked at Bunny.
“Before Mommy fell down. Vanessa said special tea helps headaches.”
Vanessa whispered, “She was three.”
Lily looked up.
“I remember the blue cup.”
Emily’s blue mug.
The one that disappeared after she died.
Michael cursed under his breath.
Ramirez asked Lily gently, “Do you know where the cup went?”
Lily nodded.
“Vanessa put it in the garage freezer.”
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Stop asking her questions!”
Ramirez caught her arm.
Grace looked at me.
“Garage. Now.”
In the freezer under old ice packs, we found a sealed plastic bag.
Inside was Emily’s blue mug.

Still stained at the rim.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
